When he got the role in Friends, he was already an alcoholic, but his cast mates were “understanding and patient”. Matthew wrote: “It’s like penguins: when one is sick or injured, the others surround and support him, circling around until the penguin can walk on its own. That’s kind of what the cast did for me”.

Between rehabilitation and relapses, the situation worsened in 1997 following a jet ski accident. Due to his injuries, he started using opioid painkillers, eventually taking 55 pills a day. Too many: in 2018, he suffered an intestinal perforation. “After two weeks in a coma, my family was told I only had a two percent chance of survival.”
