Siamak Namazi, Morad Tahbaz, and Emad Sharghi are three of the five Americans released from captivity in Iran. The names of the remaining two remain undisclosed at the request of their families. The president, expressing gratitude to partners such as Qatar, Oman, Switzerland, and South Korea, emphasized the importance of remembering the other detainees. The president’s comments faced criticism from congressional Republicans and former officials.

After months of negotiations, the United States and Iran have come to an agreement to exchange ten prisoners. This includes five Iranians held in the US and five Americans detained in Evin prison, Tehran. Recently, the released American detainees, along with two of their family members, boarded a Qatari jet bound for the US. Of the five Iranians released, labeled “non-dangerous” by the White House, two will return to Iran, one will relocate to another country, and two will remain in the US.

In addition to the prisoner exchange, the Washington government has also agreed to unfreeze six billion dollars of Iranian oil funds previously held in South Korea. This decision signifies a shift in the tumultuous relationship between the two nations, with efforts to curb Iran’s nuclear programs, mitigate its role in the Ukraine conflict, and stabilize the energy and oil markets. However, this move has been perceived by the Iranian populace as yet another betrayal by the West.

Activists refer to this strategy as “appeasement” — making concessions to an aggressive force to avoid conflict. There is speculation about the utilization of the six billion dollars, with a senior US official stating that the funds should only be used for humanitarian purposes or risk being locked again.

Just days ago, large crowds took to the streets, marking the anniversary of the death of Mahsa Amini, demonstrating the people’s desire to end the current regime despite its oppressive nature. Analysts from various institutes have criticized the US administration’s decision, suggesting it prolongs the struggles of the Iranian people. Meanwhile, international events, like soccer superstar Cristiano Ronaldo’s visit to Tehran, highlight the disparities and restrictions faced by locals.
